SFP module is still being used as an industry standard by worldwide manufacturers, which has been an industry workhorse for many years in many networks such as SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, PON, and other communications industry benchmarks.
And here in this blog, we’re going to explain its definition, working principles, some basic functions, and various types of the SFP module for beginners.
What is an SFP Module?
As we've mentioned, Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is typically a fiber optic module that stands for a small form-factor pluggable, also known as a gigabit interface converter, and fits into an SFP socket or port on an Ethernet switch or ethernet media converter. It’s a typical and simple version that is compatible with a wide range of network applications including switches and fiber optics. These transceivers follow the SFP MSA standards. It facilitates the seamless conversion of Ethernet signals into optical signals and makes it easy to adjust existing networks without having to redesign the entire cable infrastructure.
In modern fiber optic networks, an SFP module is simply a small modular transceiver that plugs into an SFP port on a network server. Because of its small size and flexible features, the SFP module has replaced the GBIC module in most applications, allowing it to be utilized in intimate networking spaces to prompt fast communication between switches and essential networking components. A typical SFP fiber module basically includes a cage, PCBA, chip, and TOSA+ROSA or BOSA for Bidi transceiver.
How does an SFP Module work on a network switch?
It’s a multifaceted question that must depend on the specific situations and requirements. SFP essentialities not only facilitate high-speed communication between switches and network components but also makes it ideal for areas that may not be very accessible due to its small form factor. It is compatible with duplex multimode as well as simplex cables, mainly used with copper or fiber optic cables. There are many newer versions of SFP Modules, which can offer super high speeds of up to 10Gbps.
Although it’s manufactured later than the GBIC and SFF form factor, SFP Module has shown its competitive edge, which can overtake the other two modules. For instance, it has a compact size and smart real-time monitor, which not only provides high port density for more bandwidth but also enhances DDM function to make simple operations. And it’s convenient to plug in and plug out without restarting the switch.
How can we choose an SFP Module?
It’s indispensable to understand the difference between various types of SFP modules first as we did. And the way is to analyze the communication requirements, including checking your personal switch or other devices, knowing the target link distance and link budget, and considering the operating temperature. By following these necessary steps, users can choose the suitable transceiver quickly.
The second step is to check the switch or other network devices and then match the correct SFP. Then knowing existing network cabling types, target link distance, and link budget is necessary. If you have a multimode fiber cabling structure, then choose the multimode SFP. If you have single-mode fiber cabling, a single-mode transceiver is the only choice. But remember, you should choose an SFP supporting longer transmission distances than expected or poor fiber optic cable may cause a potentially failed link.
For a typical indoor environment, using a commercial-grade transceiver is enough. But it’s still indispensable to consider the operating temperature, especially in extreme outdoor applications, you should use the industrial transceiver. Also, remember to check compatibility with the supplier before ordering. Because the switch cannot recognize an incompatible transceiver, which wastes funds and valuable sources.
Conclusion:
SFP modules with various types are based on different classification standards. Its main function is through inserting a transceiver into the switch port, so it can help users bridge communicate with another switch for tens to hundreds of kilometers, which allows it to be utilized in networks to offer fast speed in communication between switches and important networking components. But it has been a challenge to choose the suitable module since there are so many different modules, which requires us to know the different classifications and identify the correct transceiver.
